In 2023, The Night Shift began as a university final project. Built in Unity over six months by a team of five students, the finished uni project launched for free on Steam in Early Access on August 13th.

A month later, Martyn Evans, one of the original developers, continued work on the game independently. Shifting development to Unreal Engine, he began expanding and reimagining the experience from the ground up. The focus was on building a more immersive, atmospheric horror game - something darker, more detailed and far more ambitious in scope.

A public version of the Unreal build was released on March 15th, 2024, and development continued steadily with frequent updates and refinements. On August 7th, 2025, The Night Shift exited Early Access and into its full release. With overhauled visuals, expanded environments, and enhanced mechanics, the release represents the most complete and polished version to date.

The Founder
Hey!
I'm Martyn, founder of Red Spiral Studios and sole developer of The Night Shift. I took my first step into the game development world when I was 13, and starting with creating various custom levels in Valve's Hammer World Editor for various Source Engine games like Half Life 2, Team Fortress 2, Portal 2, and Half Life Alyx.
It wasn't until COVID hit in 2020, that I wanted to change my career from 10+ years in hospitality to the games industry. In 2021 I started a Bachelors degree in Game Development at SAE in Brisbane, initially I was a full time student but changed to part time study with me graduating in 2023.
I started my professional career in 2022 at Gameloft Brisbane in QA, and progressed into Production moving into an Associate Producer position and now, Producer at Krome Studios. However, in my spare time, I focus on my personal career in Red Spiral Studios and development of The Night Shift.
